kulacom announces favorite artist

Thousands of Jordanians attended the Sunny Art Fair in December and voted for their favorite featured artist.

To help encourage local Jordanian artists, Kulacom held a competition for the Sunny Art Fair “favorite artist”.

Congratulations to the winner - Karma Shawa

This young artist was raised in a family with a strong appreciation for the Arts. As a child, she was mentored by her aunt, artist Laila Shawa, and won the Prince Hassan Award for Islamic Art while she was an IB student.

She obtained her undergraduate degree from the London School of Economis and, despite pursuing a career in the public sector - still found time to study art in an effort to further her passion.

Karma exhibited her artwork for the first time at the Sunny Art Fair.

She hopes to complete her first solo exhibition in the very near future.

Special thanks to Kulacom for supporting local artists and highlighting the importance of Art in Jordan.

12 ways how not to get swine flu

With the massive outbreak of Swine Flu across Jordan we thought we’d give you some tips on how to avoid getting it:

1) Get the Flu shot – and definitely get the H1N1 Flu shot if it’s available.

2.) Wash your hands as often as possible.

3.) If you have a fever, it’s best to call in sick.

4.) Use tissues when you sneeze or cough and dispose of them immediately.

5) Avoid hugging and kissing everyone you know, a smile will have to do for now.

6.) Check up on your sick friends and colleagues through Facebook or by calling them, no need to make any visits.

7.) Make sure all surfaces around your home or office are disinfected regularly.

8.) Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you.

9.) Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth after you’ve shaken hands with anyone.

10.) You might not want to share any food or drinks with people.

11.) If you’re feeling ill, go to the doctor to get checked out. Chances are you might have a normal flu, but stay on the safe side.

12. ) Weddings, parties, funerals, schools, and all other indoor social gatherings are high risk areas for catching infections, so this season, it’s okay if you don’t make an appearance.

breast cancer awareness month

There are many common misconceptions among us about Breast Cancer and here are some of the myths and the real facts.

Myth:
Under wire bras cause breast cancer.
Fact:
Years ago, a book was published that suggested that under wire bras can constrict the body’s lymph node system, causing breast cancer. However, the link between under wire bras and breast cancer is false and completely inaccurate.

Myth:
Antiperspirants and deodorants can cause breast cancer.
Fact:
Antiperspirants and deodorants do not cause breast cancer; this link between antiperspirants and breast cancer is completely false.

Myth:
Small-breasted women can not get breast cancer.
Fact:
The amount of breast tissue a woman has does not affect her risk of developing breast cancer. Breast size is certainly not a significant risk factor for breast cancer.

Myth:
The best place to practice a self breast exam (SBE)is in the shower.
Fact:
Starting at age 20, women should practice monthly SBE standing in front of a mirror and lying down. The steps performed in each position may be repeated while showering, as soap eliminates friction and may have a better efficacy for detecting lumps.

Myth:
Drinking coffee increases a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Fact:
Coffee does not cause breast cancer, and in several studies with rats, coffee has been shown to actually prevent cancer.
